Telluride Jazz Celebration: Day 1 Has Soul(ive)

by Louise Uznanski, Richard Uznanski, Holley Dey

Thunder clapped and torrential rain fell on the eve of the festival, but on Friday the sun smiled on Telluride and music filled the air. Families gathered in Town Park to celebrate the day and the 36th annual Jazz Festival. There were feathers in the hair of frolicking children, hoops encircling hips that swayed to the beat and arms raised to applaud the musicians.

In all, five bands performed on the Roy Hargrove Town Park Stage, named for the Festival’s guest of honor. First to the stage was this year’s winner of the Telluride Jazz band competition, Jababa. Next the energetic Crescent Super Band appeared with guest Roberta Gambarini. Then followed Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds with gritty vocals and funky harp play. The Marco Benevento Trio then took the stage, offering smiles with the music, and tossing “Bene” stickers and their sole remaining CD to the crowd. Headlining Friday’s entertainment was Soulive. The three piece band filled the night with their jazzy, soulful sound and drew an apprecIative crowd to stage front.

The following photographs offer a preliminary look at The Day 1 festivities. An in-depth review of the bands and the music at the 2012 Telluride Jazz Festival will follow.
