New Album Preview: KATRIN Goes from “Frail to Fearless”

Independent singer/songwriter Katrin Roush offered a preview of her soon-to-be-released album “Frail to Fearless” on Tuesday evening at Boston’s House of Blues.  While the Red Sox were breaking hearts on the field across the street, Katrin opened her heart to a roomful of receptive listeners.

Ms. Roush’s set was notable for its intensity and emotional honesty.  Delivered in a rich, warm contralto, her original songs draw from common experience and provide an unvarnished window into the complex passions of everyday life and everyday people.  These are tales of love and longing, and sometimes of regret.  Far Away is the story of a woman trapped by obligation and weary of her circumstance, but whose Dreams never fall asleep, they’re just lost in the laundry heap, ground into the dirty kitchen floor.

The original song Cobblestones draws from the three summers that Katrin spent as a Boston street singer .  Her performance skills were honed in Harvard Square and beside Fanueil Hall where For a nickel or a dime, a minute of your time, I’ll share my life with you

At this preview performance of select songs from the upcoming album, Katrin was backed by members of her original band, as well as by album producer Jerry Marotta on drums and percussion.  Marotta is well known for his work with artists including Peter Gabriel, The Indigo Girls, Elvis Costello, and Sheryl Crowe, among others.  Marotta’s bandmates Daniel Weiss (keys),  Bill Dillon (guitar), and special guest, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer (The Lovin’ Spoonful), John Sebastian (harmonica and guitar) also contributed.

“Frail to Fearless” is Katrin’s fourth album.  The self taught musician began singing at an early age and has been playing acoustic guitar and writing songs since her late teens.  Her natural voice is full of soul, influenced by rock and with a taste of country. Through hard work and persistence, this singer/songwriter has built a solid resume that includes a European tour, recent opening slots for Huey Lewis and Chris Isaak, and a national songwriting competition award from Mountain Stage.

With the release of this new album, Katrin is poised to bring her passionate vocal and songwriting skills to the attention of a national audience. Take a listen!

The following video of Cobblestones was recorded at the House of Blues Foundation Room performance on September 20.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Sebastian played harmonica and delighted the audience with a song as well.

Wow! Great insight to someone breaking through on the scene. “…media duties fall to the B team!” What does this mean? Quality media!
In addition, how many truly know the meaning of “contralto”. Every day is a learning experience. 🙂

    Nice blog OnTap!
