Taylor Hicks on Tour: Fan-tastic

When Taylor Hicks and band came to New Jersey last month, one family was more than ready, and waiting.

“We were so excited to see that Taylor Hicks was playing at Mexicali Live. We bought the tickets as soon as we got the email so that our two daughters could be up close to see. Charlee, 9, has been a huge fan since American Idol and saw Taylor in GREASE on Broadway as well. Isabella, 7, liked Taylor but wasn’t sure if she would like the show since it was going to be her first concert.”

What did Isabella think of the show? “This was my first concert, and it will be my best concert ever! I want to go see Taylor Hicks here again!” While older sister Charlee knew most of the songs, it took a little while for her to warm to the concert setting. She was hesitant to approach the stage during the show, but did inch closer to take some pictures.  Just before the encore, both girls found a comfortable place by the stage with Taylor’s other excited fans.  By the time Hicks returned, the girls had relaxed and were dancing and screaming for more.

Said Charlee and Isabella’s father, “We never could have imagined that Taylor would notice them and give them harmonicas right there from the stage. It was so exciting to see their faces at that moment and that just continued as they waited for autographs and pictures. They both walked out with pictures with Taylor and signed t-shirts and harmonicas; better yet were the smiles that lasted for days.”

What did the girls’ Dad think of the show?  “I really enjoyed it and definitely have to say that Taylor and the band seem to love what they are doing.  They looked like they were just having fun up there.  It wasn’t about anything but the music AND having a good time with the crowd.  Especially in a small venue like Mexicali, it’s like you are part of the show too.”

“Taylor did a great job of mixing it up with different songs and types of music.  Gotta say my favorite might have been when he threw a little Smokey and the Bandit into Soul Thing.   But of course we loved the “Takin It To The Streets” encore when the girls were up at the stage.   The piano player and the Great Balls of Fire solo were excellent.  The sax player was very good too … he kinda stayed tucked away to the side but he was really great.  Can’t say enough good things about the show, Taylor, or his fans after this great night.”

The whole family enjoyed the opportunity to meet Hicks after the show.  “We love that Taylor takes the time to take pictures with everyone after the show (really just a down to earth guy).   He was the same way when we saw him after GREASE.  Thanks Taylor for acknowledging the “little” fans too and being so amazingly nice to our daughters at the show. We’ll be looking for your next visit to New Jersey or New York!!!”

Family friendly, fan friendly, fan-tastic: the Taylor Hicks band returns to the northeast in mid September for shows in Norfolk, CT, Tarrytown, NY, and Rutland, VT.  More information is available from the concert page in the blog header, or from Mr. Hicks’ official site at www.

Thanks for this excellent article. The fans at this show really loved Taylor’s performance. I was there and these two young fans got to experience live music practically one-on-one. I enjoyed watching the fans at this show as much as Taylor’s great performance. His band is fantastic.
These young fans and their excitement at getting a Taylor harp was icing on the cake.
Thanks again. Great article and the pictures say it all!

I am so HAPPY this story is on the blog. The GIRLS and their Dad “Charlie” were a pleasure to meet at the Mexicali! And I am sorry I didn’t get to speak to his wife Bernadette as well.

Taylor always gives ONE THOUSAND percent at his shows to the audience, but he seems to have a “special” place in his heart for the kids. So the “words” from Charlie, Charlee, and Isabella rang so true!

I feel honored to be a little part of making this story happen, and won’t be ONE bit surprised if the FAMILY comes to see Taylor Hicks and his FABULOUS! band when they come back East!

  5. At 1:27 on this video, you see the girls at the stage. Then Taylor gives the first harp away. He then reaches back to his harp case and gets another harp and gives it to the 2nd girl. Priceless. Thanks Skeeter for bringing this to us!

I love this article. The glee on the kids faces is so cute, and that Taylor gave them harmonicas? – Priceless! Wish my daughter, who is about that age, and i could have been there, too! It is great that Taylor’s music can enthrall young and old!

  8. This is sooo typical of Taylor’s heart-his love for children and the fans-he gives so much to the concert to make it right for the fans and he never forgets the fans themselves-

This is another example as we have all seen over the years of Taylor’s generosity and his loyalty to those who got him where he is-

And Skeeter for your part in capturing this-thanks again!!!

  9. It is so awesome that you gave those little girls harmonicas from the stage that is something that they will remember for the rest of their lives. I have a 9yr old that when she was 7 colored you a pic and sent it to you while you were in NY and you sent her a personalized autographed picture. She thought that was the coolest thing ever and I personally didn’t think it was fair that when I sent you a note to get my own pic that my name was not on mine but you put to Briana on hers….LOL . Anyway she said that I will probable never get something “to me” and so far I have been to ummm lets see….4 concerts over the last 3 yrs and I haven’t. SOOOOO… that being said it would be awesome to get the autographed T-shirt… would be even better if it had “to: Rose” on it then I could say to my 9yrs old…..NA, NA, Boo,BOO, I GOT One Toooo!!!! LOL

The pictures are exquisite & the memories you have shared are priceless! What an exciting experience your family had; especially for those two lovely young ladies. Taylor’s love for young people is well known. He always gives everything he has with each concert.
Hmmm~you don’t suppose at your next concert, I could possibly squat at the front of the stage between Charlee & Isabella? It might be my only opportunity to get a harmonica too!…LOL
